Kevin van Veen keeps streak going as Motherwell push St Johnstone towards danger

Kevin van Veen scored for the eighth consecutive game as Motherwell moved into seventh place in the cinch Premiership and left St Johnstone in relegation peril.

The Dutchman dinked home a re-taken penalty in the 52nd minute at McDiarmid Park after having his initial effort saved.

Motherwell survived a brief spell of late pressure before Mikael Mandron’s stoppage-time goal sealed a 2-0 victory which removes any lingering doubt about the Lanarkshire side’s top-flight status.

Van Veen has scored 11 goals in eight matches and 26 in total this season, while his 22-goal Premiership haul leaves him just two short of fellow PFA Scotland player of the year nominee Kyogo Furuhashi.

The only concern for the visiting support was the sight of the forward limping s…

´Players go down, not up, when they leave me´ – Conte unworried by Alli returning to face Spurs

Antonio Conte does not expect Dele Alli to come back to haunt his former side Tottenham when they host Everton on Monday, claiming players usually go down, not up when they leave him.

Alli s seven-year spell with Spurs came to an end in January as he left for Goodison Park in what is said to be an initial free transfer.

Frank Lampard s side will reportedly be obliged to pay £10million for the midfielder after he makes 20 appearances, with subsequent performance-based add-ons that may take the eventual figure as high as £40m.

England international Alli was one of four departures from Spurs last transfer window, with Bryan Gil, Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso all sent out on loan.

Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur were brought in as replacement…

Carragher: Liverpool can win the Premier League title

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool can go on and take the Premier League title from Manchester City, following their 2-0 win over Arsenal on Wednesday.

The Reds moved to within one point of City after goals from Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino claimed the three points from the Emirates Stadium.

Since a 2-2 draw with Chelsea in January, Jurgen Klopp s side has reeled off nine straight league victories, setting their match at City in April up as a potential title decider.

With that game in mind, Carragher believes the Premier League title is up for grabs, saying while working as a pundit for Sky Sports:  It s 50-50, because of the situation, the game is at the Etihad.

This is the first time I ve ever felt Liverpool can win the league at any time this se…

Aston Villa complete Sanson signing as French midfield star joins

Aston Villa have completed the signing of midfielder Morgan Sanson from Marseille for a reported fee of £15.5million.

Sanson has played with Marseille since he signed for them from fellow Ligue 1 side Montpellier in January 2017.

He was part of the Marseille team which made the Europa League final in 2018 and the one which finished second under Andre Villas-Boas last season.

Villa boss Dean Smith, whose team have had a strong first half to the Premier League season, was enthusiastic about Sanson s credentials after the deal was confirmed on Tuesday.

Morgan has performed consistently at the highest level in French football for a number of seasons as well as in this season s …

Pogba told to ´show up´ by Rangnick as Frenchman nears end of Man Utd contract

Paul Pogba has been urged to show up for Manchester United and prove what he is capable of as he nears the end of his Old Trafford contract.

The 28-year-old is set to return to United s squad for Friday s FA Cup fourth-round tie against Middlesbrough after three months out with a thigh injury.

France international Pogba has just four months remaining on his deal with the Red Devils and is now widely expected to seek a new challenge at the end of the campaign.

Regardless of where Pogba intends to play his football beyond this season, Rangnick simply wants the central midfielder to be fully motivated in order to find his best form.

It s up to him now. His contract is expiring in the summer and if in the end he would like to stay or go somewhere else he ha…

Aston Villa confident of signing Coutinho permanently

Aston Villa are confident of reaching an agreement with Barcelona over a proposed permanent transfer of Philippe Coutinho this summer, according to .

The Brazilian playmaker returned to the Premier League in January by joining Aston Villa on loan for the rest of the season, having spent five years at Liverpool before joining Barcelona in January 2018. Liverpool reinvested the money received from that deal wisely and have won almost every trophy on offer since, while Coutinho failed to deliver on the promise at Camp Nou. The loan at Villa Park is his second move away from the parent club after the 2019-20 season which he spent at Bayern Munich.

Since joining former teammate Steven Gerrard at Villa, the 29-year-old has made 15 Premier League appearances, scoring four goal…

Georgia 0-0 Republic of Ireland: McCarthy´s men labour to dismal draw

Republic of Ireland s hopes of qualifying for Euro 2020 suffered a setback on Saturday as they were held to an insipid 0-0 draw away to Georgia.

Mick McCarthy s side remain top of Group D on 12 points, but failure to win in Tbilisi has given Switzerland and Denmark – who they face in their final two games – hope of reeling them in.

The visitors offered almost no attacking threat in what was a truly woeful display, with John Egan s header against the post early on their only chance of note.

Qualification is still in Ireland s hands but they will need a significantly improved performance when they travel to Switzerland on Tuesday if they are to progress to the finals next year.

Napoli 3 Red Star Belgrade 1: Ancelotti´s men top as Mertens grabs brace

Napoli put one foot in the knockout stage of the Champions League by beating Red Star Belgrade 3-1 to go top of a tightly balanced Group C with one game left to play.

Marek Hamsik s first goal of the season put Carlo Ancelotti s free-flowing side on their way after 11 minutes, and Dries Mertens bagged a brace either side of half-time to put the game beyond Red Star.

El Fardou Ben pulled one back but Vladan Milojevic s men can no longer progress in the competition after taking just four points from their five games, while Napoli need just a point in their final game against Liverpool to make certain of their progression.

That point will not come easy at Anfield but Ancelotti will be confident after seeing the Partenopei extend their unbeaten run to 10 matches in a…

Joao Felix scores winner for Barcelona against his parent club Atletico Madrid

Joao Felix scored the winner against his parent club as Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid 1-0 at home to move above them in the LaLiga table.

Felix, who joined Barca on loan during the summer, grabbed the only goal with a deft finish in the 28th minute – five days on from scoring his side’s second in their 2-1 Champions League victory over Porto.

Raphinha almost doubled the lead when he hit a post after the break, before Barca goalkeeper Inaki Pena came to the fore with some fine saves that included turning a Memphis Depay free-kick against the crossbar.
